Modern finance is dead. It was built to run fixed workflows.
And fixed flows follow a repeatable script: billing calculates what's owed, invoicing requests a payment, a processor moves funds, and an ERP accounts for it.
No system knows the whole story, so each system plays its part. Applications run the workflow. Accounts record the result. And people carry the context across them.
But agents don't use fixed flows. They write them as they work.
Fixed flows are fine when the steps stay the same. But an agent's steps are never the same. The next step's not written until the last one's been taken.
Take an AI healthcare agent, for example. To resolve a denied claim, the agent might submit an appeal. That appeal changes the expected reimbursement. And the reimbursement changes the patient's balance. And the balance changes what gets billed. And what gets billed changes the next move. And with every new move, the agent changes the flow.
So why can't "modern finance" solve this? Because its flows are fixed in application code. The application decides what can happen and in what order, so every agent gets the same flow. But the same flow can't fit every problem. And a fixed flow can't change when the problem does.
And yet everyone's racing to build new tools to run the same old flows. (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)
And we think that's silly. The way to automate financial work is not to give agents a fixed flow to follow. It's to let them build the workflow the job needs. For that to work, agents need a new type of financial system. One that gives them the context to decide what to do and the controls to prevent what they shouldn't.
This is the system we're building at FRAGMENT.
FRAGMENT makes your money machine-legible. Instead of trying to stitch together context across systems, the agent can build up its own understanding of your financial state and decide what should happen next.
Context tells an agent what might make sense. Controls keep it from doing something stupid. FRAGMENT enforces accounting and business rules on every action. Instead of humans catching mistakes after they happen, the system validates decisions as they're made.
Once correctness no longer depends on following a fixed workflow, the workflow can change with the deal. So, instead of fitting your deal to the financial system, you can fit your financial system to the deal.
Every transaction can have its own terms. Every deal can have its own flow. Pricing can change with the work. Money can be held, split, released, refunded, or rerouted as circumstances change. And entirely new ways of buying and selling don't need entirely new financial infrastructure built first.
We think there are millions of businesses that haven't been invented yet. Not because folks lack imagination, but because it's too hard to build the financial systems that run them. FRAGMENT removes that constraint.
Companies have always run on people. With FRAGMENT, they'll run on their own.
